Here it is Olds fans! You've found the ultimate guide for service and maintenance for the 1949 Oldsmobile. This OEM 1949 Oldsmobile Shop Manual 6 and 8 is a high-quality reproduction of the original shop manual published by Oldsmobile Division. Written at the top of both the front and back of this reproduction shop manual cover, you'll find the words, "THE "ROCKET" OLDSMOBILE'S GREATEST ENGINE". To say they were proud of this power plant would be an understatement. The more astonishing thing is, they may have been UNDERselling this point. In 1949, this engine was greater than most competitors, as well. They put the straight eights on notice.

Inside this guide, here's how Oldsmobile described this legendary power plant, "The 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket engine is of entirely new design having two banks of cylinders at a 90 degree angle. Overhead valves are used to accommodate the smaller combustion chambers necessary for high compression operation. Self adjusting hydraulic valve lifters keep the valve mechanism quiet under all operating conditions. The new Rocket engine which is designed to withstand a compression ratio as high as 12.5 to 1 operates on an actual compression ratio of 7.25 to 1 which matches the octane ratings of the premium gasoline now on the market. The bore and stroke are 3 38/4" and 3-7/16" respectively"

Whether you have the "Rocket" or the 1949 "Big Six" this 436 page book has the details you need. Have no fear, it covers way more than engines, too! What else? Just scroll down on this page to the Table of Contents section and click to open it and see the huge number of systems addressed.
