VALVE COVER | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(Refer to illustrations 3.3, 3.8, 3.9, 3.10a and 3.10b)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, and then remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2. Unbolt the dipstick and oil filler tubes at the water outlet.
  3. Remove the PCV valve from the valve cover (see illustration).
  4. Label each spark plug wire before removal to ensure that all wires are reinstalled correctly, and then remove the wires from the plugs (see Chapter 1). Detach the wires and retaining clips from the valve cover.
  5. Remove the EGR valve (see Chapter 6).
  6. Detach the vacuum rail at the intake manifold and water outlet.
  7. Remove the valve cover bolts.
  8. Remove the valve cover. If it sticks to the head, use a soft-face hammer or a block of wood and a hammer to dislodge it. If the cover still won't come loose, pry on it carefully at several points until the seal is broken, but don't distort the cover flange (see illustration). NOTE: If you bend the cover, straighten it with a block of wood and a hammer.
  9. Prior to reinstallation, remove all dirt, oil and old gasket material from the cover and cylinder head with a scraper (see illustration). Clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone.
  10. Apply a continuous 3/16-inch (5mm) diameter bead of RTV sealant to the flange on the cover. Be sure the sealant is applied to the inside of the bolt holes (see illustrations). Note: Don't get the sealant in the bolt holes in the head or damage to the head may occur.
  11. Place the valve cover on the cylinder head while the sealant is still wet and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts a little at a time until the torque listed in this Chapter's Specifications is reached.
  12. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
  13. Start the engine and check for oil leaks at the valve cover-to-head joint.

CLUTCH AND DRIVETRAIN
FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Remove the output shaft (see Section 22). Both sets of front wheel lug nuts should be loosened before raising the vehicle.
  2. Remove the bolt securing the steering stabilizer to the frame.
  3. Scribe the location of the steering idler arm and remove the idler arm mounting bolts from the frame member.
  4. Move the steering linkage towards the front of the vehicle.
  5. Remove the axle vent hose from the fitting on the carrier.
  6. Remove the left driveaxle from the output shaft by removing the six bolts. Insert a drift punch through the top of the caliper and into a brake disc vane to keep the axle from turning.
  7. Disconnect the front driveshaft (see Section 11).
  8. Remove the two carrier-to-frame mounting bolts. An 18mm combination wrench inserted through the frame will be needed to hold the upper nut from turning.
  9. Lift up and rotate the carrier until the necessary clearance is gained for removal.
  10. Installation is the reverse of removal.
