  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose and PVC valve connection.
  3. Remove the upper radiator hose, overflow tube and the water hose from the thermostat to the throttle body.
  4. Disconnect the air flow sensor connector. Remove the air cleaner case cover and the air intake hose.
  5. Wrap the connection with a shop towel and disconnect the high pressure fuel line at the fuel rail.
  6. Disconnect the fuel return hose and remove the O-ring.
  7. Disconnect the accelerator cable connection from the throttle body and position aside.
  8. Disconnect the electrical harnesses at the oil pressure switch, oxygen sensor, water temperature sensor connector, distributor, condenser, ISC, TPS, detonation sensor and the fuel injectors.
  9. Disconnect the spark plug cables from each spark plug.
  10. Unbolt the control harness assembly and set aside.
  11. Remove the thermostat housing, thermostat and the thermostat case with O-ring from the engine.
  12. Remove the rocker cover.
  13. Remove the timing belt upper cover.
  14. Rotate the crankshaft in the forward (right) direction to align the camshaft timing marks. Matchmark the camshaft sprocket and the timing belt. Tie the camshaft sprocket and the timing belt together so the sprocket will not move with respect to the timing belt.
  15. While holding the camshaft sprocket in position using the appropriate wrench, remove the camshaft sprocket and with the belt attached. Wire the sprocket and belt aside making sure constant tension is maintained on the belt. Do not allow the belt to slacken or engine timing may be altered.

CHASSIS ELECTRICAL
CONDENSER COOLING FAN (see Figures 16, 17, 18 and 19) COLT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Unplug the connector(s). Most of these connectors employ a waterproof connector. When disconnecting, make sure all parts of the connector remain intact.
  3. Remove the upper radiator hose if necessary.
  4. Remove the mounting screws. The radiator and condenser cooling fans are separately removable.
  5. Remove the fan assembly and disassemble as required.
  6. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  7. Check the coolant level and refill as required.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable and check the fan for proper operation.
VISTA The condenser fan is mounted between the condenser and grille, requiring grille and possibly bumper disassembly for removal. Remove the grille very carefully, since it is made of easily breakable plastic.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the grille assembly. The grille is held in place with 1 or 2 screws and 5 or 6 clips that may require the use of a flat-tipped tool against the tab for release.
  3. Unplug the connector. Most of these connectors employ a waterproof connector. When disconnecting, make sure all parts of the connectors remain intact.
  4. Remove the mounting screws.
  5. Remove the fan assembly through the grille opening.
  6. TO INSTALL
  7. Install the fan and secure with mounting screws.
  8. Connect the connector. Connect the negative battery cable and check the fan for proper operation before assembling the remaining parts. Disconnect the negative battery cable before continuing.
  9. Install the grille.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable and recheck the system.
