Book Excerpt: 1984-1999 Harley-Davidson Softail FX/FL Softail Big Twin Evolution Repair Manual CLUTCH, PRIMARY DRIVE and STARTER DRIVE
The primary drive, clutch, transmission and final drive systems make up the power train assembly on your Harley-Davidson. This chapter describes service to the primary drive, clutch and starter drive assemblies. Transmission and final drive service are described in separate chapters. The primary drive system uses sprockets and a primary drive chain to transmit power from the engine to the transmission. This system is designed to allow the engine sprocket to turn faster than the clutch sprocket (engine sprocket is smaller than clutch sprocket). This ratio difference increases engine torque and reduces the amount of power flowing into the transmission and final drive systems. An external chain primary drive assembly is used on all Harley-Davidson V-twin engines. This system is used because the Harley engine is a non-unit engine; that is, the engine and transmission do not share a common case. The primary drive assembly is mounted inside the primary chain case, a sealed housing mounted on the left-hand side of the bike. The chain case contains the engine compensating sprocket, clutch and clutch sprocket, primary chain, chain adjuster, soenoid and starter drive mechanism. The engine and clutch turn in the same direction.
