Honda twin-cylinder models are equipped with a battery and coil ignition system, similar in many ways to a conventional automobile.CIRCUIT OPERATION
Figure 1 illustrates a typical battery ignition system for a single cylinder. When the breaker points are closed, currect flows from the battery through the primary windings of the ignition coil. The breaker cam rotates at one-half crankshaft speed and is so adjusted that the breaker points open as the piston reaches firing position. As the points open, the magnetic field collapses. When this happens, a very high voltage is induced (up to approximately 15,000 volts) in the secondary winding of the ignition coil. This high voltage is sufficient to jump the gap at the spark plug. The condenser assists the coil in developing high voltage, and also protects the points. Inductance of the ignition coil primary winding tends to keep a surge of currect flowing through the circuit even after the points have started to open. The condenser stores this surge and thus prevents arcing at the points. Each end of the coil secondary winding connects to a spark plug, and so both spark plugs fire simultaneously. This is possible because as one plug fires at the end of a compression stroke, the other plug fires at the end of an exhaust stroke.
