Book Excerpt: 1997-2001 Honda VFR800 V-Fours Repair Manual CYLINDER HEAD: REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Caution: The engine must be completely cool before beginning this procedure or the cylinder head may become warped. NOTE: When removing the cylinder head, take great care not to allow any component to fall down into the crankcase. If any component is dropped, it must be recovered before the engine is started. FRONT CYLINDER HEAD
Note: This procedure can be carried out with the engine in the frame. REMOVAL
  1. Remove the seat and fairing lower and inner panels (see Chapter 8). Release the two clips then lift the battery cover and disconnect the battery negative (-) lead.
  2. Remove the throttle body assembly as described in Chapter 4.
  3. Remove the exhaust system front pipe assembly as described in Chapter 4.
  4. Drain the cooling system as described in Chapter 1.
  5. Remove the oil cooler and pipes (see Section 22).
  6. Referring to Chapter 3, release the retaining clips and disconnect the air bleed hose and radiator upper hose from the thermostat housing and the radiator lower hose from the water pump cover (see illustrations 5.14a, 5.14b and 514c). Disconnect the cooling fan wiring connector (located above the left side of the radiator fan switch) then slacken and remove the left and right side radiator mounting bolts and collars. Unscrew the retaining bolts and then remove both the left and right lower mounting brackets then maneuver both radiators out of position as an assembly.

BODYWORK | UPPER FAIRING
REMOVAL
  1. Remove both rear view mirrors (see Section 4).
  2. Remove the left and right side lower panels as described in Paragraph 1 to 4 then remove the inner panels as described in Paragraph 5.
  3. Remove the windscreen as described in Paragraphs 10 and 11.
  4. Remove the two trim clips securing the base of the upper fairing in position (see illustration).
  5. Unscrew the two upper screws securing the instrument cluster surround panel to the upper fairing (see illustration).
