Brake fluid is not compressible and is used to transmit force within the clutch hydraulic system. As fluid is pushed out of the master cylinder, it forces the piston in the slave cylinder to move the pushrod and release the clutch. If the clutch lever feels spongy and less responsive, there is probably air in the system. This results in increased clutch lever travel and clutch drag, which can cause transmission-shifting problems, especially in the lower gears. When adding fluid during the bleeding process, use DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealed container. Do not reuse drained fluid or use DOT 5 (silicone-based) brake fluid. DOT 4 brake fluid is glycol-based and absorbs moisture, which greatly reduces its ability to perform correctly. Purchase brake fluid in small containers and discard any small leftover quantities. WARNING: Avoid contact with brake fluid. Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when working on the clutch hydraulic system.PRESSURE BLEEDING This one-person procedure uses a pressure bleeding kit (Figure 1).
- Remove the left crankcase rear cover (Chapter Fifteen).
- Check that all of the clutch system banjo bolts (A, Figure 2, typical) are tight.
- Remove the dust cap from the bleed valve (B, Figure 2).
- Assemble the vacuum tool according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Connect a wrench and the tool's hose to the bleed valve on the clutch slave cylinder (Figure 3).
