293. OVERHAUL. With final drive removed as outlined in paragraph 292, disassemble as follows: Remove brake piston housing and adjusting shims, then remove the bull pinion. Using a suitable puller, remove bearing cone (2-Fig. 258) from inner end of axle shaft. Remove snap ring (17) on all models except 1066 gear drive. On model 1066 gear drive remove spacer, bull gear and snap ring (3). Unbolt axle outer bearing retainer and withdraw axle shaft assembly from carrier. Any further disassembly required is evident after an examination of the unit. When reassembling, press rear axle outer bearing on axle using a pipe having a diameter which will contact inner race only. Press bearing on axle shaft until it bottoms against shoulder. Install grease shield in carrier (if equipped), if it was removed, then install axle. If oil seal in outer bearing retainer is renewed, install with spring loaded lip toward inside and inner surface flush with inner surface of bore as shown in Fig 259. Use shim stock or seal sleeve when installing seal retainer over axle. Install retainer cap screws but do not tighten them at this time. Install snap ring, bull gear, snap ring on all all models except 1066 gear drive, which has a spacer and inner bearing on inner end of axle shaft.
