Book Excerpt: International Harvester Tractor Repair Manual Series 544, 656, 666, Hydro, 1466, etc. RANGE TRANSMISSION
All hydrostatic drive models are equipped with a two-speed range transmission. The range transmission is located in the rear frame and has three positions: High (direct drive), Neutral and Low. The MPH indicator drive is located in the transmission and is driven by a gear on the mainshaft (bevel pinion shaft). To overhaul the range transmission, the rear frame must be split (detached) from hydrostatic drive housing.
TOP COVER: ALL MODELS
279. To remove the transmission top cover, first disconnect battery cables and on Farmall models, remove battery and battery support. Unbolt and remove the seat and seat support. Remove platform assembly and disconnect electrical wiring to rear frame. Drain hydraulic lift housing, then disconnect hydraulic lines to rear frame. Disconnect pto control linkage and lower end of transmission shifter rod. On International 544 tractors, remove pto rear unit and on all other models, remove the upper hitch link mounting bracket (3-point hitch) or cover (2-point hitch). Then, working through this opening, loosen the hose clamp and disconnect suction hose from upper tube. Disconnect hitch lift links from rockshaft arms. Unbolt rear frame top cover from rear frame and attach a hoist to the hydraulic lift and top cover assembly. Disconnect the mph drive cable under instrument panel.
FILTERS AND BLEEDING: ALL MODELS
135. The tractors are equipped with two spin-on cartridge type fuel filters. Filters should be serviced when engine shows signs of losing power. The filters are located on right hand side of tractor behind channel. Refer to Fig. 119. Filter (2) toward front of tractor is the primary and filter (3) to rear is the final fuel filter.
