The Jeep CJ is available in an open utility body style with a folding windshield. Later models feature removable, folding tops or hardtops in both conventional and pick-up styles. Power from the engine is passed through the transmission to a transfer case and then to the front and rear axles by driveshafts. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available on these vehicles. Early models used a cam and lever type steering gear while later models featured a recirculating ball type steering gear with power assist as an option. Suspension is by semi-elliptic springs with tubular shock absorbers. Both four-wheel drum and front disc/rear drum brakes are used on these vehicles, with power assist as an option.

OIL PAN - REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
- Due to clearance problems with the chassis crossmember, the oil pan can only be removed with the engine out of the vehicle.
- Remove the oil pan retaining bolts and lift off the oil pan. It may be necessary to use a rubber mallet to break the seal.
- Prior to installing the oil pan, clean any dirt or old gasket material from the sealing surfaces of the oil pan and engine block.
- The oil pan gasket consists of four separate gasket pieces. Each must be carefully installed in its proper place to form a good junction with the other pieces it joins with.
- Install a rear oil pan gasket in the rear main bearing cap and apply a small quantity of RTV-type sealant in the depressions where the pan gasket engages in the block.
- Install the front oil pan gasket on the timing gear cover, pressing the tips into the holes provided in the cover (photo).
- Install the side gaskets on the oil pan, using grease to hold them in place.
- Trim the ends off the front gasket as indicated in the accompanying illustration to form a good joint with the side gaskets.
- Apply a bead of RTV-type sealant at the split lines between the front gasket and the side gaskets. The pan can now be installed.
