Book Excerpt: John Deere Tractor Repair Manual Series 2150, 2155, 2255, 2350, 2355, 2355N, 2550, 2555 SAFETY VALVE BLOCK
A safety shock valve is used on all models to act as a relief valve should a front wheel strike a solid object. Piston in steering cylinder is forced to one side and oil pressure increases greatly in hydraulic steering lines. The suction valve on pressure loaded side of safety valve closes immediately. The safety shock valves and suction valves may be located in steering valve housing as shown at (33 to 39 - Fig. 38), or in a separate safety valve block (40 or 41 - Fig. 39). The specific type used will depend upon model, serial number range and equipment installed on the specific tractor. On all models, the safety valve opens at 20,5000 kPa (2980 psi), allowing oil to flow to the low pressure side of steering cylinder. The check valve (2-Fig. 40) prevents oils from returning to hydraulic pump when pump is not operating.

PISTONS, RINGS AND SLEEVES
ALL MODELS Pistons are cam ground, forged aluminum alloy and are fitted with three rings located above the piston pin. Pistons are available in standard size only, but pistons with different ring height and different head height are used for different applications. Be sure correct type is installed for engine and application. Pistons are stamped "FRONT," marked by an arrow on the piston head or stamped "B" or "H" on underside of piston pin boss. Do not stamp head of unmarked pistons for identification before checking underside of piston boss, because upper ring groove may be damaged. If necessary to mark piston, use a method that does not result in damage to piston.
