This DIY service, repair and maintenance manual by Haynes, covers 1993-2006 Nissan Altima 4-door sedan models. Altimas are powered by a transversely-mounted 2.4L or 2.5L 4-cylinder or a 3.5L V6 engine. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transaxle.
Book Excerpt: 1993-2006 Nissan Altima Repair Manual ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS
STARTER MOTOR | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(Refer to illustrations 17.4 and 17.5)
  1. Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.
  3. Remove the air intake duct and the air filter housing, if necessary (see Chapter 4).
  4. Disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid connector from the starter motor (see illustration).
  5. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts and detach the starter from the engine (see illustration). Depending upon the year and engine type, the starter/solenoid assembly may be mounted above the transaxle or below the intake manifold.
  6. If necessary, turn the wheels to one side to provide removal access.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.

STARTER SOLENOID | REPLACEMENT
(Refer to illustrations 18.1, 18.2a and 18.2b)
  1. Remove the nut and disconnect the wire from the solenoid electrical terminal (see illustration).
  2. Remove the two bolts from the solenoid and separate the solenoid from the starter assembly (see illustrations).
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal.

BRAKES
POWER BRAKE BOOSTER | CHECK, REPLACEMENT AND ADJUSTMENT CHECKS
    OPERATING CHECK
  1. Depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off and make sure there's no change in the pedal reserve distance.
  2. Depress the pedal and start the engine. If the pedal goes down slightly, operation in normal.
  3. AIRTIGHTNESS CHECK
  4. Start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes. Depress the brake pedal slowly several times. If the pedal depresses less each time, the booster is airtight.
  5. Depress the brake pedal while the engine is running, then stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there's no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight.
  6. OUTPUT ROD LENGTH CHECK
  7. Remove the master cylinder (see Section 8). It isn't necessary to disconnect the lines from the master cylinder, as long as you can move it forward far enough to provide clearance for the following measurement. But make sure you don't kink the metal lines. Apply about 20 in-Hg of vacuum to the brake booster with a hand-operated vacuum pump (see illustration), measure the length of the output rod (see illustration) and compare your measurement to the dimensions listed in this Chapter's Specifications. If the rod length is outside specifications, replace the booster.
