Book Excerpt: 2005-2014 Nissan Titan 2004-2014, Nissan Armada Repair Manual TRANSFER CASE
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) models are equipped with an electronically-controlled transfer case that distributes power to both front and rear axles when the system is engaged. A switch on the instrument panel allows a choice of 2WD, 4WD High or 4WD Low.
- Input from the switch goes to the Transfer Control Unit, which communicates with the transfer case actuator, the automatic transmission, and other devices. The actuator consists of an electric shift motor and a Transfer Case Position Switch. The motor actually does the mechanical shifting of the transfer case, when directed by the Transfer Control Unit. The Transfer Case Position Switch communicates the actual position of the electric shift motor to the Control Unit at all times.
- We don't recommend trying to rebuild this transfer case. They're difficult to overhaul without special tools, and rebuild units may be available that represent a savings of time and money.
SUSPENSION AND STEERING SYSTEMS
REAR LOWER LINK (AND COIL SPRING) Refer to illustrations 12.22 and 12.24
- Disconnect the electrical connector for the wheel speed sensor and detach the wire harness from the lower spring link.
- Mark the coil spring and the upper and lower spring seats so that they can all be placed back in their original positions during installation (see illustration).
- Support the rear lower link and coil spring tension with a floor jack.
- Mark the relationship of the adjusting cam bolt for the lower link to the subframe bracket on both sides. Hold the cam bolt, then loosen the nut (see illustration). Warning: Do not attempt to remove the cam bolt and nut at this time as the link is still under tension from the coil spring.
- Remove the link mounting fasteners from the rear knuckle (see illustration 12.22).
The Haynes 72070 Repair Manual is based on a complete teardown and rebuild of the Nissan Titan and Armada vehicles. The writers and photographers document and shoot photos while the mechanics teardown/rebuild the Nissan trucks. This really enhances the quality of the DIY instructions in a step wise manner - allowing the authors to include exploded views and photos of complex steps to simplify the tasks for the DIY mechanic.
