Book Excerpt
BRAKES: BRAKE OPERATIONA linked brake system is used on all models. It consists of two brake circuits: the brake lever circuit and the brake pedal circuit. Two different systems are used on the models covered in this manual. In both systems, however, the front brake calipers and the rear caliper(s) are applied when the brake lever is operated. On all models, except X2 and Touring models (Figure 1), the linking is achieved through the use of a rear caliper with two separate hydraulic circuits. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is applied to the inner diameter of the rear caliper piston. When the front brake lever is applied, hydraulic pressure flows from the front master cylinder through the brake union and on to both front brake calipers. Hydraulic pressure also flows to the outer diameter of the rear caliper piston. The brake system on X2 and Touring models (Figure 2) accomplishes the same braking through the use of a dual-input rear master cylinder.
