Book Excerpt: Toyota Truck and Land Cruiser Owner's Bible COOLING SYSTEM SERVICE
WHEN TO USE AN AFTERMARKET ELECTRIC FAN It takes far less to cool a lower compression, low horse-power four-cylinder or in-line six-cylinder engine than a high compression, high horsepower DOHC six or V-6. The original Toyota Land Cruiser F engine produced 138 (SAE net) horsepower from 236.7 cubic inches (3878cc) with 7.8:1 compression. The late DOHC 4.5L DJ Land Cruiser engine produces 212 SAE net horsepower with 9:1 compression ratio and 4477cc displacement. Now add an automatic transmission. A/C and power options to the late engine's cooling system equation. Auxilliary electric fans have found their way into some OEM truck applications. They typically serve as factory add-on devices for heavy duty cooling. Toyota has used OEM electric fans and auxiliary coolers for cooling manifolds, oiling systems and EGR valve systems. The engine driven fan assembly still provides primary radiator cooling, however. For the conversion engine in a tight chassis bay, there's a temptation to use an electric fan in place of an engine driven fan. On many large V-8 conversions, the engine's mechanical fan is difficult to fit within the confines of a smaller engine bay or will not line up easily with the center of the radiator core. The Land Cruisers accept a domestic V-8 transplant without much trouble. 4WD pickups easily accept a GM V-6 power plant. In either of these applications, the engine bays provide room for an engine driven mechanical fan. My experience has taught that a mechanical fan is the only sensible method for cooling an off-highway engine. (See performance engine chapter for details).
ACCESSORIES
MATCHING ACCESSORIES AND WIRING When selecting the right wire gauge for your add-on accessories, note the relationship between amperage draw, Watt ratings, candle power and length of the wire runs. Auxiliary lights, a sound system or a winch each have an assigned amperage draw. Cover that rating with a safety margin. You can always go bigger and be safe. Whenever possible, use fuses or circuit breakers. Protect higher amp items and wiring with reset breakers. Protective devices are available from 1.0 amp to 250 amp ratings and higher. A winch's current draw is similar to a starter motor. Route cables very carefully to avoid high amperage shorts and possible fire. Review the winch manufacturer's guidelines for circuit protection and cable routing. Remember: more wire means added resistance. Resistance raises amperage draw. Note the length of wire feeding each accessory. Select the recommended amperage ratings from an automotive wire manufacturer's guidebook, and match wire size accordingly. Account for the entire distance that current will flow, from the battery source to the accessory. If your truck has a camper or aftermarket fiberglass body panels, you must run a ground wire to any accessory mounted on non-conductive material (fiberglass, plastic, wood, etc.). In this case, choose a wire gauge that satisfies the total length of the power lead and ground wire. A ground lead must always match the gauge size of the power lead.
HIGH WORK STANDARDS Safe routing of the long wires that run from the front to the rear of your truck requires close watch. A quality wiring job ensures that vibration and road shake will not separate or damage wires. CAUTION! Improperly installed plastic wire ties, clamps and straps have a nasty habit of wearing through wire insulation. A yardstick I like to apply is the worst case scenario. (Some call this "Murphy's Law", but I don't believe Murphy or anyone else can stake sole claim to the phenomena.) Assume that the wire you're routing will face tension, heat and friction. Are there sharp metal edges just waiting to whittle at your vital wiring loom? Can engine heat melt the plastic off wires? Will chassis movement tear a crucial connection apart? You must depend on your wiring in blizzards, on remote desert moonscapes, atop craggy and windswept mountains - and even in the fast lane of the freeway during rush hour. Take the time to route, shield, tape, and secure all wires.
