- Check the points for metal build-up as shown in Figure 19. If they cannot be filed clean with a few strokes of a point file, replace the points.
- With prolonged use, the fiber cam follower wears against the point cam. This can alter point gap and timing on that particular cylinder. Reset the point gap and check timing periodically as detailed in the following steps.
- Occasionally check the point return spring. Use a scale and buzz box. The points should open with approximately 700 to 800 grams pressure.
- The points should be cleaned and regapped, and the timing checked according to the maintenance schedule.
- Check for burned oil fim on the points from time to time and clean as necessary. Clean the points with a point file and electrical contact cleaner. Run a business card or other clean card between the points until the card comes out clean.

This chapter covers frame component service, suspension unit service, and wheel and brake service and maintenance. The front wheel and brake are very critical components on any motorcycle. No matter how well the motorcycle is running, if it can't be ridden safely it is useless. The front brake must supply more braking effort than the rear to stop in the shortest possible distance. Proper maintenance will assure these operate safely. Balance and shimmy are more critical on the front wheel than the rear. The front wheel affects all other handling aspects of the bike. The front wheel should be checked for balance, shimmy (side-to-side play), wobble, out-of-round, run-out, and proper tire inflation. Many of these problems go unnoticed at low speeds but become dangerous at high speeds.
