Book Excerpt: 1981-2002 Yamaha PW50, PW80 Y-Zinger, BW80 Repair Manual TROUBLESHOOTING
CLUTCH AND GEARSHIFT LINKAGE A centrifugal clutch is used on the models covered in this manual. The clutch will engage and disengage at an engine rpm or speed just above idle. The main clutch problems are listed below. Because there is no external clutch adjustment on these models, further inspection will require that the clutch be removed from the engine. This section also lists shifting problems that can be caused by a faulty external shift mechanism assembly used on BW80 and PW80 models. Because the PW50 uses a direct drive transmission, suspect a faulty clutch when experiencing off-idle clutch and transmission engagement problems. Problems directly related to the transmission for all models are listed under Transmission in this chapter.
MOTORCYCLE CREEPS WITH THE ENGINE IDLING (PW50)
  1. Warped clutch shoe assembly.
  2. Partially seized or damaged clutch housing.
  3. Severely worn or damaged clutch springs.
  4. Faulty clutch weight shafts.
  5. Incorrect transmission oil weight.

ENGINE (BW80 AND PW80)
POWER REDUCTION PLATE Because the BW80 and PW80 models are designed for young riders, it is critical to limit the speed of the motorcycle to correspond to the rider's skill and experience. Both the BW80 and the PW80 are originally equipped with a power reduction plate (governor). The power reduction plate (Figure 3) is installed between the exhaust port and exhaust pipe. Consisting of a round plate with a small hole, it effectively blocks off most of the exhaust port opening to reduce the power output of the engine. The power reduction plate is mounted onto the exhaust pipe gasket and can be separated from the gasket at a suitable time determined by the rider's parent or guardian. See the BW80 or PW80 owner's service manual for more information on both safety devices.
