Book Excerpt: 2004-2017 Yamaha YFZ450, YFZ450R ATV Repair Manual by Haynes COOLING SYSTEM GENERAL INFORMATION
The vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a liquid cooling system which utilizes a water/antifreeze mixture to carry away excess heat produced during combustion. The combustion chamber and cylinder are surrounded by a water jacket, through which coolant is circulated by the water pump. The pump is mounted to the right side of the crankcase near the front and is driven by a gear. The radiator is mounted at the front of the frame. The coolant is pumped upward through the cylinder water jacket and cylinder head, then flows from the cylinder head to the radiator where is it cooled, then flows through the radiator bottom hose and water pump, then back into the engine. The cooling system includes a temperature warning light and fan, but does not include a thermostat. All models have a reservoir tank. As the coolant heats up, it expands and flows into the reservoir tank. As it cools, the coolant is pulled back into the cooling system.RADIATOR CAP | CHECK
If problems such as overheating or loss of coolant occur, check the entire system as described in Chapter 1. The radiator cap opening pressure should be checked by a dealer service department or service station equipped with the special tester required to do the job. If the cap is defective, replace it with a new one.COOLANT RESERVOIR | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
The YFZ450 coolant reservoir is located under the left side of the rear fender (see illustration). The YFZ450R coolant reservoir is located forward of the engine on the left side of the vehicle. (see illustration). Disconnect the hoses from the tank. Remove the tank mounting bolts and take it off. Installation is the reverse of the removal steps.
